In the context of the EHESS/Iméra chair in transregional studies that I held in Spring 2023, I organized a literary, musical, and activist symposium entitled “Voiceless Exilés,” which focused on the Mozambique Channel as a maritime cemetery.
This event analyzed and contextualized the transformation of the Mediterranean Sea and the Mozambique channel, which were originally places of intellectual, cultural, religious, and commercial exchanges, into maritime cemeteries. Writers, slam poets, and representatives of humanitarian associations presented the aesthetic and activist choices that guide their expression and understanding of this deadly reality.
The symposium was organized by Iméra (Institute for Advanced Studies/Aix Marseille) in co-partnership with L’École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) and SOS Méditerranée. The event took place in “Turbulence” at Aix-Marseille University.
